If you’re considering a name change after marriage, here are some popular options and when a Deed Poll might be needed:
You can combine both surnames into one, either with or without a hyphen (e.g., Smith-Jones or Smith Jones). While some organisations accept a marriage certificate for this, many—especially banks—may require you to change your name by Deed Poll to officially recognise the change.
If you prefer to keep a connection to your family name, you can turn your maiden name into a middle name (e.g., Sarah Ann Williams becomes Sarah Ann Williams Johnson). This is done with a Deed Poll.
Meshing involves blending parts of both surnames to create a new one (e.g., Williams and Johnson become Willson). A Deed Poll is needed for this unique option.
If your marriage certificate isn’t in English, you’ll usually need a Deed Poll as proof of your name change instead of an official translation, which can be more expensive.
For changing the name of someone who is at least 16 years of age.
15 year olds can apply but the Deed Poll document issued will be dated for their 16th birthday.
For changing the name of a child (who is under 16 years of age).
The applicant must have parental responsibility for the child.
For changing the surname of a family (i.e. at least one parent and one child who is under 16 years of age).
The parent(s) can also change their forenames if required and the child(ren) included will be added to the applicant parent’s Deed Poll document.
