Advice for Transgender and Non-Binary Adults and Children
At the UK Deed Poll Service, we are committed to supporting transgender and non-binary individuals, as well as parents of transgender and non-binary children, in legally changing their names and titles to align with their gender identity. Our services are designed to be respectful, confidential, and tailored to meet diverse needs.

Guidance for Transgender Adults
If you’re ready to live permanently in your affirmed gender, legally changing your name and title is a significant step. Our Deed Poll service enables you to update all official documents, including your passport, driving licence, bank accounts, and medical records. We can also assist in changing your title—for instance, from Mr to Miss, Ms, or Mrs.
Unlike a Statutory Declaration, which requires a solicitor or legal official, our Deed Poll process allows you to sign the document in the presence of an independent witness, such as a friend, offering privacy and convenience.
Please note that while changing your name and title is a vital part of your transition, it does not legally change your gender. To do so, you must apply for a Gender Recognition Certificate through the government’s Gender Recognition Panel.
The Gender Recognition Act 2004, which came into effect on 4 April 2005, allows individuals to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), granting legal recognition of their acquired gender.
To apply, you must have lived in your affirmed gender for at least two years and intend to continue doing so permanently. Surgical procedures are not a requirement for obtaining a GRC.
Guidance for Parents of Transgender Children
If your child has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, you may wish to change their forenames to reflect their gender identity. Our Deed Poll service facilitates this, allowing updates to official documents like passports and school records.
We offer the option to make the Deed Poll document gender-neutral by replacing terms like “son” or “daughter” with “child,” and pronouns like “he” or “she” with “they”. Additionally, we can change your child’s title from Master to Miss or vice versa. Each modification incurs an additional fee of £4.
To request these changes, please indicate your preferences in the comments section of the application form.
Guidance for Non-Binary Adults
For non-binary individuals seeking to adopt a gender-neutral name, our Deed Poll service provides a straightforward solution. We can also change your title to “Mx”, a non-gender-specific title recognised since 2011. This enables you to update all official documents to reflect your identity accurately.
It’s important to note that, as of now, the UK does not legally recognise non-binary genders. Therefore, while you can change your name and title, your legal gender remains as recorded on your birth certificate unless you obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate, which currently only recognises male or female genders.
Guidance for Parents of Non-Binary Children
If your child identifies as non-binary, you may wish to change their forenames to gender-neutral alternatives. Our Deed Poll service supports this, allowing updates to documents such as passports, school records, and medical files.
We can issue a gender-neutral Deed Poll document and change your child’s title to “Mx.” Each of these modifications requires an additional fee of £4. Please specify your requirements in the comments section of the application form.
Changing Legal Gender
While changing your name and title is a significant step, legally changing your gender requires obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate from the government’s Gender Recognition Panel.
This process involves meeting specific criteria, including living in your affirmed gender for at least two years. The Gender Recognition Act 2004 provides the legal framework for this process.
